We take allergies seriously, which is why we will always make you aware of any allergens in our foods.

Recently we did some digging into the world of allergies and found out 3 interesting facts about food allergies that we thought we would share with you.

Around 1-10% of adults and children in the UK have a food hypersensitivity (The Association of UK Dietitians (BDA),2015)

With up to 10% of the population having a food hypersensitivity a business such as ours needs to be diligent in our practice. For over 25 years we have continued to be professional in our practice, caring for our staff and customers.

Most food allergies affect young children under the age of 3.

Surprisingly most food allergies affect young children under the age of 3 (NHS,2019) fortunately according to the anaphylaxis campaign some children will outgrow allergies. Studies suggest that around 20% of children with a. peanut allergy will outgrow it (Anaphylaxis Campaign, 2017). This is why it is recommended to have allergy tests done throughout childhood and early adulthood to monitor allergies.

There are 14 major food allergens need to be mentioned on labels.

According to Allergy UK, there are 14 main food allergens, although anyone can be allergic to a variety of different things – food-related or not!

The main food allergies are as follows:

Celery; Cereals containing gluten; Crustaceans; Eggs; Fish; Lupin; Milk; Molluscs; Mustard; Tree Nuts; Peanuts; Sesame seeds; Soya and Sulphur dioxide. (Allergy UK, 2020)

At Lauren’s, we will always inform you what is in our food, making it clear to what our foods contain and keep you safe.

Sponsoring Sporting Success!

Sponsoring Sporting Success!

We are very pleased to sponsor local Rugby Union player Bradley Overthrow.

Bradley is 23 years old and his position is either a centre or wing.

Until recently, Bradley played for Cheltenham Saracens. However, he has now moved to Old Cryptonians in Gloucester and made an instant impact. In their most recent game, a cup match away against Exeter Saracens, he scored two tries in a 66 v 3 victory!

He also plays for The Cats 7s team. Their greatest achievement was to travel to an international rugby 7s tournament in Dubai, where they made it through to the quarter finals.

We wish Bradley every success in this and future seasons.

Eating Lunch at your Desk can Harm your Health!

Eating Lunch at your Desk can Harm your Health!

I read recently about BUPA research which highlighted the number of workers in the UK who do not take a proper lunch break. By eating at their desks, the research suggests, they are risking health and happiness and reducing their productivity.

The research considered the lunchtime habits of 2,000 workers and found that nearly two thirds could not always take the statutory 20 minute break when working six hours or more. 28% claimed they didn’t normally take a break at all.

45% of workers said they did not leave their place of employment at lunchtime and one third admitted eating at their desks. Of those, some 40% said they answered phone calls and emails whilst eating.

There are many possible health risks including:

• Overeating. A working lunch may mean you don’t feel as full, resulting in snacking in the afternoon.
• Lack of mobility. Not moving from your desk can lead to increased risk of diabetes and heart disease.
• Increased tension. Sitting at a desk all day can lead to tension in the muscles and joint pain.
• Increased stress. Not having a proper break and still working while eating can lead to increased stress.
• Direct health risks. Bacteria can thrive on desks, phones and keyboards, especially with food particles around. Research has found that the average desk contains 400 times more germs than a toilet seat.

Not having a proper break reduces the body’s ability to recharge and energy levels drop, resulting in reduced productivity in the afternoon. Satisfaction and happiness levels also drop, leading to increased risk of ‘burn out’.

The answer for businesses is simple: schedule regular breaks for your employees whilst ensuring that phones are adequately manned. Lunch breaks away from the desk and even the workplace itself can help reduce stress and unhappiness amongst employees, cut health risks and increase productivity.
